Sword fight!
G14evah!

This is one of those toys that didn't interest me all that much when it was announced. I'm fond of the original and had my doubts we needed a smaller tribute to it after all these years. Surprisingly, Armadascream is pretty good. He comes with two separate swords now (instead of using a wing that becomes a sword. A definite improvement on the original). One thing I do notice is the abundance of red on this toy is much more obvious then it was on the original Voyager. This is a fairly good toy overall and it even has some improvements over the original. I like the original better though. I think it's nostalgia--Armada Starscream was one of the better toys from that line (in my opinion) and his size was just right. A Deluxe doesn't do the original justice (same goes for Universe Galvatron and Laser Optimus Prime). Still, as a tribute to a bygone toy you can't go wrong with this one.

Verdict:  Good. Worth it for Armada fans especially.

I didn't think much of this toy. In the package, the combined robot mode even has a propeller for a head! After opening it up and playing with it though, I have to say I'm impressed they managed to make three functional Minicons that can each transform and merge into a decent robot form as well (the feat alone deserves some respect from a design perspective). The separate robots are decent as are their vehicle forms. I'm not blown away by any of them but they are a nice homage to the Armada era and good bang for the buck.

Verdict:  Good. Worth it for Armada, Minicon and combiner aficionados.

I'm a bit prejudiced about Slug. Even from the time I first saw the toy I loved the funky color scheme on it. A purple and red Dinobot? Yes, please! (And for those purists out there, there's an upcoming SDCC version in grey). The toy, like its comrades, was relatively simple to convert between forms (a welcome change from a few years back when it seemed like you needed an Engineering degree to figure some of these toys out). I think I needed the instructions only for one little detail (getting his horns right in robot mode). Both forms look excellent and I appreciate the visored "knight" look all these guys have. Slug comes with twin swords, both of which can be attached in dino mode too and used for him to cause even more mayhem. The swords are a bit rubbery but tolerable.

Verdict:  Excellent.

In dino mode, this guy has the slightest resemblance to Dinobot (but more colorful). That's where the similarity ends though as this is an all-new mold. This guy is primarily seafoam and lemon colored. I particularly like his claw "shoulder pads" in robot mode (it shouldn't work but somehow does). He comes with twin axes (also soft plastic but a bit better then Slug's swords). His foot design is a bit weird--the dino head becomes his feet but mine seems stable enough so I'm cool with it. Another awesome new Dinobot!

Verdict:  Excellent.

I read someone else saying how Strafe is the weakest of these new Dinobots. I have to agree. He's hard to stand up in dino mode--his robot arms attach to the underside of his wings. And why he has two dino heads is anybody's guess... His robot legs are designed a bit weird, making him a bit trickier to stand up straight. In dino mode he also looks like a robot hunched over in some shots (see the front pic to see what I mean). Despite these critiques though, I generally like him too. He looks cool in both modes and fits well with the others on his team. (Technically, I purchased the two-pack with the Minicon but didn't bother reviewing it as I wasn't really interested in it).

Verdict:  Good. Some minor design issues but not bad overall.

Like the Beast Wars era Megatron, Scorn has a tail for one hand and dino head w/hand for the other. His simple red color scheme makes him stand out from his contemporaries a bit, making him seem a tad bit more sleek then the others. His sword weapon is a harder plastic too (a plus in my opinion). He transforms fairly easily as well (I had no real problem with any of these Dinobots. Grimlock was the worst--and even he wasn't that tough). Very cool looking robot in a group of cool looking robots.

Verdict:  Excellent.

Grimlock v. Grimlock
The Dinobots rule!
Dinobots attack!

Grimlock is the leader of the Dinobots and stands imposingly over them all. He comes with a tail/club to kick robo-tail and take names! The toy is awesome looking in either form (I slightly prefer the robot form though. It's "knight" styling is appealing to me). The brown color scheme is a welcome change from his classic grey with yellow styling (truth be told, I don't really consider this guy to be G1 Grimlock. Just another Dinobot toy with the same moniker). Grimlock was very slightly harder to change between forms--but that's not saying much really. Even at his worst, he's a million times easier then the TF toys of three or so years ago (many of which were outright tough). I think his dino mode looks a bit weak from the front (a problem FOC Grimlock shares). I also question why they gave him dog style ears when he's supposed to be a T-Rex...an odd design choice on someone's part and it looks kind of weird, to be honest. Being a marquee character, Grimlock's got various different toys for this movie but I felt the Voyager toy was well proportioned and sleek looking so I went with that. A very nice toy from this year's batch!

Verdict:  Excellent.
